Easy doce de grao recipe a famous dessert from Goa.
recipeIngredient (used american measuring cup, 1 cup = 250 ml)
  • 150 gms split bengal gram
  • 1 cup fresh grated coconut
  • 5 to 6 tbsp ghee (clarified butter) / coconut oil
  • 1 cup coconut milk
  • 1 cup water
  • 1.5 cup grated jaggery/palm jaggery Or 2 cups brown sugar/sugar
  • 1.5 t/s fresh cardamom powder
  • a pinch of salt
  • cashews for decoration (optional)
How to make the recipe?
  1. Pressure cook the chana dal until 5 whistles Or boil chana dal in water until tender.
  2. Combine freshly grated coconut and chana dal with all the coconut milk. Grind into a processor until smooth paste is formed. I don't have pic for this one.Take a heavy bottomed wide mouthed sauce pan. Add ghee and place on low heat.
  3. Add jaggery/sugar and water. Cook for 4 to 5 mins.
  4. Pour the ground paste. Keep stirring continuously with a spatula/ spoon else it might burn at the bottom.
  5. It's time to add cardamom powder.
  6. Continue stirring the mixture unless the water evaporates and starts leaving the edges of the pan.
  7. The mixture will thicken at this point switch off the gas. Spread the mixture on a greased plate/dish. Allow the mixture to cool down. Cut into diamond shapes. Garnish with cashewnuts Or almond flakes.
