Tomato Rice - Tomato Pulao - Thakkali Sadam

  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 2 cups organic rice Or kolam rice Or basmati rice
  • 6 tomatoes chopped into chunks
  • 1 onion chopped finely
  • ½ t/s fenugreek seed (methi)
  • 1 t/s asofoetida (hing)
  • 1 t/s mustard seeds
  • 10 to 12 curry leaves chopped finely
  • 4 to 5 mint leaves
  • 1 t/s cumin seed
  • 1 t/s garam masala powder
  • 1 t/s turmeric powder
  • 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 tbsp red chili powder
  • 1 tbsp roasted cumin powder
  • 1 tbsp tamaring pulp
  • ½ cup roasted groundnuts
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1.5 cups water
  • black salt as per taste
How to make the recipe?
  1. Firstly soak rice in water for 10 mins.
  2. Meanwhile chop tomatoes. Grind all of them into a processor until they are smooth puree.
  3. Chop onions and keep all the ingredients ready.
  4. Take a cooker Or pan add oil.
  5. Once oil is hot add mustard seed, asofoetida, cumin seed, fenugreek seed, curry leaves, mint leaves and sugar.
  6. When they crackle add chopped onions and groundnuts. Saute onions until light brown in color. Add little salt which will help
  7. in frying onions faster.
  8. Put ginger-garlic paste and stir for 30 secs.
  9. Now add tomato puree and stir nicely.
  10. Add all spices like turmeric, red chili powder, garam masala powder and roasted cumin powder.
  11. Cook for 3 to 4 mins add water to it.
  12. Finally add black salt, tamarind pulp and soaked rice.
  13. Pressure cook until 3 whistles Or cook them in a pan with lid until rice is cooked.
  14. If you feel water is less add more water. The ratio should be 2:4 if using 2 cups of rice then 4 cups of water.
  15. However we are also using tomato puree so add water accordingly.
  16. Serve tomato rice with papad Or pickle.
