You could also make these mawa pedas as prashad for offering or bhog or just to eat at home. This recipe is easy to make and I enjoy making them. Also I have tried to play with vivid colors and patterns on the peda. If you have kids they would love to help you as it’s fun and learning both.

I have used chakli maker moulds to give my pedas different shapes and imprint on them. You could just leave the peda as it is or give them imprint. Adding color is optional I also don’t prefer artificial color but somehow used for the peda recipes.

Mawa could be used store bought or homemade. Just check if mawa has sugar or is without sugar before using and accordingly add sugar. Adding nuts are optional.

Everyone loves mawa peda back home but somehow the pedas tasted salty. As I had used store bought mawa which had higher salt content in them. So do take care before using just a word of caution better is to make mawa home.

Let’s make mawa peda step by step:

1. Place a wide bottomed pan with ghee.

2. Once ghee is warm add the mawa. You could mix with your hand or grate them.

3. Add milk, saffron infused milk  and sugar.

4. Keep stirring for a minute on low flame. Just keep pressing the grated mawa with a spatula while stirring. Add milk powder and milk masala powder. Keep stirring.

5. Finally add cardamom and nutmeg powder.

6. Simmer the mixture but keep stirring all the time on low heat.

7. You would see the mixture starts getting thicker and leaves the edges of the pan. It would appear like a thick lump of mass moving together.

8. Switch off the gas and allow the mixture to cool down. You could refrigerate and then use the mixture. Rub some oil or ghee and form small balls. I don’t have a pic for the last step. Flatten them with your palm and give them some imprints or design. Serve the mawa pedas with some chopped nuts or rose petals.

  • chopped pistachio flakes for topping pedas (optional)
How to make the recipe?

Notes
1. If the mixture has lot of moisture add some milk powder and cook for a longer time.
2. If the mixture is too dry then add few drops of milk.
3. Milk masala powder is optional if not available ground some cashews or almonds and dry grind them to make a powder. But don't grind too much else the butter would come out of nuts.
4. Instead of saffron use little turmeric powder for yellow color.
