My pet freaks out on fish and pomfret is her favorite fish. My pet was wagging tail and asking to eat the moment My mom was making them lol π
Please buy fresh pomfrets or fish. I don’t prefer cold storage fish. But if fresh fish is not available than you can get fish from cold storage. Luckily India is blessed with lots of coasts and coastal fishes.
Pomfret Curry Goan style recipe stepwise below:
1. Clean the pomfrets and dice them as per you desire. I have sliced them into medium pieces. Rub salt on them and keep aside. Before using the Pomfrets again wash them in water.
2. For Green Paste: Combine 1 chopped onion, grated fresh coconut, 5 Green chilies, 1 /2 cup coriander leaves, Coriander seeds, turmeric, garlic cloves, cumin seeds and ginger.
3. Grind all of them to forma smooth green paste. Keep this paste aside.
4. Take a big wok or vessel add oil. Once oil is hot add rest of chopped onion along with 7 curry leaves. Saute them on low flame for about 2 mins.
5. Now add chopped raw mango, green chilies, tomatoes, few coriander leaves.
6. Add the green paste and stir them. Add water as consistency required. I have added 2 cups water.
7. Let this cook for 5 mins until the curry starts bubbling and rising on medium flame.
8. Finally add fish and salt. Stir gently after adding pomfrets. Also add rest of curry leaves.

Dear Vandana,
Firstly apologize for the delay in response, was on a small trip hence couldn’t respond. You could use 1 tablespoon tamarind pulp or tamarind ball soaked in hot water. Hope this information helps you.

Hi Maria
tried this curry with locally available fish. we do not get pomfret or raw mangoes here
used 500 gms fish, 1 cup grated coconut and tamarind and rest of ingredients as you have mentioned in the recipe. came out well but just wanted to check if pomfret fish used was appox 500 gms
the Mandeli curry looks delicious. My mouth is watering but again we do not get mandeli here. just wanting to double check –
what would be the approx. weigh of 13 mandeli &
1/2 coconut would be about 1 cup grated (I buy frozen grated )
sorry to be asking so many questions – just that I am a novice with fish – mostly fry – but want to try looking at the pictures
maria says
Sarita yes they should be around 300 – 400 gms pomfret. Glad you liked the curry. It would be difficult to predict the weight of 13 mandeli fish yeah app 1/2 coconut should be around 1 cup. hope have been able to help you π do try and let us know how they turned out? have great weekend.

thanks
maria says
For 5 pomfrets it would be around 1 cup coconut Sarita π you could double the quantity of the ingredients for more people. Thankyou for coming here do try and let us know how the curry was? and you are welcome.
SARITA says
Hi,
would half fresh coconut be 2 cups grated fresh coconut
thanks
sarita
maria says
Sarita it depends on the size of the coconut so you could grate half coconut but just measure in a cup. Hope this helps’ you.
