Mathura Peda recipe with step by step photos – mathura peda is a special delicacy coming from Mathura – Uttar Pradesh. I have always loved the taste it just melts in your mouth leaving a delicious flavor tempting to eat some more. Made these yummy goodies for the ocassion of ganpati festival. I have adapted and modified this recipe from the harekrsna site .

There are many ways of making mathura peda recipe. This recipe is quick, easy and yummy. The main ingredients are mawa (khoya), milk, sugar, pistachios and saffron. This pedas are coated with powdered sugar or whole sugar which makes them unique from other pedas.

In India pedas are generally distributed on occasion like school result (report), college result, baby birth (generally for girl child), new job, new car etc the reason could be any but pedas are welcome and eaten with many 😉 was trying to rhyme 🙂

Mainly sweets like modak, fried modak, gujiya, coconut ladoo, rava ladoo, pedas are made as prashad or bhog for lord Ganesha. So make your favorite sweet for offering or for eating.

Let’s make step by step Mathura Peda recipe:

1. Infuse saffron in hot milk and set aside for 10 mins. Stir the saffron nicely with the hot milk.

2. Take a non stick pan place on low heat. Add powdered sugar and khoya.

3. Keep stirring them and mix them nicely until the mixture is smooth.

4. Time to add saffron infused milk but the challenge here is to add milk little by little in batches. Add milk only once the previous milk is absorbed.

5. Keep stirring and cooking until milk is absorbed and evaporated.

6. Once the mixture starts leaving the edges of the pan. Switch off the gas add pistachios, rose water or vetiver water, cardamom and nutmeg powder. Combine all nicely.

7. Make marble sized balls while the mixture is warm. Gently flatten them with your palm. Just toss the pedas over the powdered sugar or granulated sugar while the pedas are still warm.

8. Allow the pedas to cool and serve them as offering or distribute as goodies.

recipeIngredient (used american measuring cup, 1 cup = 250 ml)
  • 1.5 cup unsweetened khoya (mawa or evaporated milk)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar or as required + ½ cup granulated sugar or powdered sugar for coating the pedas
  • ½ cup milk + 1 tbsp more milk
  • ½ tsp cardamom powder
  • ¼th tsp nutmeg powder
  • 2 tbsp pistachios chopped finely
  • 3-4 drops of vetiver or rose water or essence ( I used vetiver (kewra essence)

Notes
1. The pedas have to be shaped while it's still warm.
2. You could mould them if you have the moulds or just shape them with your hand.
3. If you like more sweet then add more sugar as I prefer less sweet.
