Pomfret Curry Goan Style, How to make Pomfret Curry Goan Style Recipe

We had pomfret fry, pomfret curry with hot rice and bread. What more one can ask for?. This Pomfret Curry Goan Style is simple to make. I am sharing my moms top secret with all of you. I am happy as I believe in sharing.

Pomfret Curry Goan Style

My pet freaks out on fish and pomfret is her favorite fish. My pet was wagging tail and asking to eat the moment My mom was making them lol 🙂

Please buy fresh pomfrets or fish. I don’t prefer cold storage fish. But if fresh fish is not available than you can get fish from cold storage. Luckily India is blessed with lots of coasts and coastal fishes.

Pomfret Curry Goan style recipe stepwise below:

1. Clean the pomfrets and dice them as per you desire. I have sliced them into medium pieces. Rub salt on them and keep aside. Before using the Pomfrets again wash them in water.

Easy Pomfret Curry Goan style recipe.
Author: Maria@flavorsofmumbai.com
Recipe type: meals
RecipeCuisine: Indian Cuisine, Goan food
recipeIngredient (used american measuring cup, 1 cup = 250 ml)
  • 5 Pomfrets
  • ½ Fresh Coconut Grated
  • 2 Onion chopped(1 for curry other for paste)
  • 7 Green Chilies (5 for paste and rest for curry)
  • 2.5 tsp Coriander seeds (Dhaniya)
  • 2 t/s Turmeric
  • 1 inch Ginger chopped
  • 12 Garlic Cloves
  • 1 and ½ Cup Coriander leaves (1 cup for paste rest for curry)
  • 1 tbsp Cumin seeds
  • 14 Curry leaves
  • 1 Raw Mango (Chopped into Big slices just like you cut Mango) Or Tamarind
  • ½ Tomato (Optional)
  • 3 tbsp Oil
  • Salt as per taste
  • 2 cups Water
How to make the recipe?
  1. Clean the pomfrets and dice them as per you desire. I have sliced them into medium pieces. Rub salt on them and keep aside. Before using the Pomfrets again wash them in water.
  2. For Green Paste: Combine 1 chopped onion, grated fresh coconut, 5 Green chilies, 1 cup coriander leaves, Coriander seeds, turmeric, garlic cloves, cumin seeds and ginger.

  10. Switch off the gas and check the taste of your curry. See if more seasoning is required.
  11. Your Pomfret Curry Goan Style is ready. Garnish with coriander leaves.
  12. Serve hot with steamed rice Or bread.
Notes
1. You can make this green curry with pomfrets or prawns or Mackerels.
2. Also I have used Raw Mango which is available in summer however you can always use tamarind instead of Mango. I always remove the seed of raw mango from the curry post 1 hour once curry is cooked. Otherwise the curry becomes more sour.
You can keep the mango seed in the curry if you like the sour flavor 🙂

      Dear Vandana,

Firstly apologize for the delay in response, was on a small trip hence couldn’t respond. You could use 1 tablespoon tamarind pulp or tamarind ball soaked in hot water. Hope this information helps you.

I tried this recipe today AND it looks great. Was tired of making the same old Kerala red fish curry or stew with pomfret and wanted something different. Thanks!

Zeenath its small 5 pomfrets used for this curry. You can use 2-3 big pomfrets instead of 5 small pomfrets.

    Hi Maria

tried this curry with locally available fish. we do not get pomfret or raw mangoes here

used 500 gms fish, 1 cup grated coconut and tamarind and rest of ingredients as you have mentioned in the recipe. came out well but just wanted to check if pomfret fish used was appox 500 gms

the Mandeli curry looks delicious. My mouth is watering but again we do not get mandeli here. just wanting to double check –
what would be the approx. weigh of 13 mandeli &
1/2 coconut would be about 1 cup grated (I buy frozen grated )

sorry to be asking so many questions – just that I am a novice with fish – mostly fry – but want to try looking at the pictures

Sarita yes they should be around 300 – 400 gms pomfret. Glad you liked the curry. It would be difficult to predict the weight of 13 mandeli fish yeah app 1/2 coconut should be around 1 cup. hope have been able to help you 🙂 do try and let us know how they turned out? have great weekend.

    Hi Maria

thanks for the replies for the above query an also on the green fish curry
reason why I ask is – I live outside india and get only grated coconut. for this recipe would 2 cups be fine. I think the fish would be about 1 kilo. again we do not get pomfrets here so would be trying with some other fish

    thanks

Sarita it depends on the size of the coconut so you could grate half coconut but just measure in a cup. Hope this helps’ you.
